Long Run & Family Fun

Welcome to Monday, readers!

Yesterday’s long run went well overall. It was in the upper 30’s when I first left home, and reached the low 40s towards the end of the run. I wore tights, a long sleeve shirt, and light running jacket with thin gloves. About an hour into the run I started to feel warm, but once the wind blew I cooled off again, so it was one of those confusing running days in terms of attire. Taking off the gloves helped.

Even though it was cold outside, I was happy I carried water with me. I went through an entire bottle by the end of 16 miles since the water fountains are finally shut off. The first 8 miles were roughly a 9 minute mile pace, but I had to pick up the pace in the last 8 as I was running late. Miles 12, 13, and 14 were supposed to be at marathon pace (8-8:10 minute miles), but I ran the following splits: 8:20, 8:12, and 8:07. Last mile was a cool down. My legs weren’t able to move faster in the first MP mile, but luckily I was able to speed it up in the second two miles. I will just have to practice this again!

My post-run stretch was followed by a delicious meal out with visiting family. Dim Sum (Chinese dumplings and small plates) was an interesting experience. We went to a popular place in Boston’s Chinatown called China Pearl. Luckily my aunt knew exactly what to get. I think I’ll always have to bring along someone who is Dim Sum knowledgeable- otherwise it might be a bit overwhelming!

After brunch and our goodbyes, Mark and I headed to see some holiday lights in Faneuil Hall and to check out the new Public Market in the Haymarket area. We had heard that Hillary Clinton was in town to be endorsed our Mayor Marty Walsh. We weren’t able to get into Faneuil Hall to hear Clinton speak, but were able to watch her powerful speech on the big screen outside the hall. She is such an inspiration!

We then walked past the Boston Christmas Tree by Quincy Market- it looked so beautiful and fully decorated.  The tree was given by the people of Halifax Nova Scotia, as per tradition since 1971. The tree has been given in gratitude for Boston’s assistance in Halifax during the 1917 Halifax explosion. The massive evergreen is the largest Christmas tree I’ve ever seen!

Mark and I then proceeded to the Boston Public Market, a newly-opened year-round indoor market selling fresh, locally sourced food from the New England area. There are over 35 vendors selling produce, meats and fish, crafts, local craft beer, wine, baked goods, and much more- and we were very impressed with the selection! We picked up some local chicken as well as freshly-made pasta, and are looking forward to returning as often as possible! Always love purchasing goods made right in New England!

The rest of the afternoon included getting ready for the week ahead, stretching out the legs (i.e.- so much foam rolling!), and watching a few minutes of the Patriots game. Monday is the start of a full week- including lots of workouts, work, and some fun plans towards the end. Have a happy Monday!

Have you had Dim Sum? What is your favorite Chinese food?

How were your runs this weekend?

Any fun plans this week?

I run with a handheld water bottle, but am about to start using spibelt’s H20 bottle. I will be writing a review on that product soon, I swear by spibelt! How are your legs feeling after your race this weekend?

      1. When you do your review, I’ll check it out! I was kind of achey, but I think I’ve worked it all now. But you must be feeling it a bit today surely! Ouchie!

You’re so impressive – my longest run is 25 minutes at the moment – I was a bit slower than usual today but that is okay.

I LOVE dim sum – there’s a place in Chinatown called The New World which is super.

Re hydration – I wear a Camelsac so I don’t have to carry a bottle (I get some arthritis in my fingers and that makes it worse).

Sounds delicious! And I haven’t heard of a Camelsac (I know camelback)- but will look into it. Good luck!
