Heat Wave’s Coming & Some Updates!

Hello from the South Shore, MA! We’ve had a busy spring and summer so far with a big move to the ‘burbs from Boston. I am still mourning the move from my favorite city, but we aren’t too far and I am happy to have more space. We are finally all settled into the new house after two months of updates and are getting into a routine. Mark had his first lawn mowing experience yesterday after a nearly two decade hiatus. The suburban life is definitely growing on us!

Meanwhile I am scouting out running routes and new running partners (already missing the C-town crew of course, but I will be back in!) in my new town. As the temps have risen a bit and we prepare for a heat wave (talking 96+ degrees which is SO HOT for MASS!), I joined the local planet fitness gym and have also supplemented with OrangeTheory. I am a little late to the game with OT, but it’s such a good workout. Just so much data- almost overwhelming, but I know that it’s addicting and fun. I can still feel my arms from last week’s workout as I haven’t lifted anything more than my 25 lbs one year old in months. I love the rowing machine aspect of OT as well- something totally different in which I am developing my skills.

Speaking of one year old- I can’t believe 365 days have passed since our baby G has been born! He brings us so much joy and laughter every day, and I can’t imagine life without him. It was a fun week of celebrations!

As far as races, I have recently run a handful of local shorter distances such as the Hingham Road Race 5 miler in early June, The BAA 10K in late June, and the local 4th of July road race. I ran with family and friends at each one and had a blast. During the BAA 10k a group of 4 of us managed to stick together and catch up throughout the entire race- a feat I thought much more challenging than the race itself among thousands of other runners.

I am working on my next running goals and looking towards the future. I definitely need to step up the 50 states game if I am ever going to complete that goal, since I have 39 states to go and that number has remained stagnant for the last couple of years- for good reasons of course. I am still in awe of how many people have crossed that line off their bucket lists, a true inspiration to me! I think I will stick to roads for now, but I potentially have aspirations for a longer distance than a 50k…perhaps a 50 mile trail race? For now, I will scout out some more local races, enjoy the summer, and plot out some future goals.

As some of you know, I am a huge fan of listening to podcasts on the run, and have loved these recent episodes:

  1. Ali on the Run Show: Sarah MacKay Robinson, elite runner (so inspiring as a new mom myself!)
  2. Running Rogue: Building a Training plan with Jen Harney (I coach several runners on the side and found this to be super helpful)
  3. I’ll Have Another with Jenny Simpson
  4. Marathon Training Academy: Charlevoix Marathon Race + Recap + How to Keep pushing in a Marathon (I always love hearing Angie and Trevor’s race recaps in faraway places. They’re so good!)
  5. Guilty pleasure: The Morning Toast (not running related but these sisters keep me laughing hysterically)

Have a fantastic day and stay cool!!

What are your summer running goals? Anyone working towards 50 states?

Anyone training for an ultra this summer or fall?

What are your favorite podcasts? I’d love some new recs!
